San Francisco State University’s student publications have announced their new editors-in-chief for Fall 2021. Chris Ramirez will continue as editor-in-chief of Golden Gate Xpress, the student newspaper, and Kenzie Aellig will replace Maddison October as editor-in-chief of Xpress Magazine.

Ramirez, a print/online journalism major, worked as a copy chief and managing editor for Golden Gate Xpress in Fall 2020 and has served as editor-in-chief since December 2020. This semester he produced a project on President Joe Biden’s first 100 days in office. He has also worked as an intern for the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

The returning editor-in-chief says he’s planning to take on bigger projects, such as covering the campus reopening and what that will entail.

Ramirez said he enjoys being in a leadership role.

“I consider myself an extrovert so I really enjoy talking to people and hearing people’s stories and being able to tell [stories],” Ramirez said. “I think there’s a lot of power being able to do that.”

Aellig transferred to SF State in 2019 from Palomar College in San Diego. She is currently a staff writer for Xpress Magazine, and has written about the impact of nature and mindfulness on mental health and Depop, the fashion marketplace app.

She is already making plans for next semester’s publication.

“I really want to make Xpress like a great representation of SF and I would really like to highlight other unrepresentative communities that aren’t normally highlighted in the media, traditionally,” Aellig said.
