Guest Speaker: Joel Umanzor

Joel Umanzor is an express desk reporter at The Standard. Prior to that, he was a Hearst Breaking News Fellow, working at both the Houston Chronicle and the San Francisco Chronicle. Originally from Richmond, California, Joel graduated from San Francisco State in 2021. He knows the Bay Area journalism landscape well and the stress of finding a staff position in journalism. He’ll be sharing tips for finding a fellowship or job in a crowded market.

He’ll also speak on what he’s learned covering San Francisco, from finding story ideas, cultivating sources and hitting deadlines to improving one’s reporting, writing and stress management.
