Jesse Garnier has taught multimedia, design and online journalism at SF State since 1998. He is editor and publisher of SFBay.ca, a Bay Area news startup founded in 2011. Previously, Garnier directed editorial graphics staff in New York for the Associated Press, covering the 9/11 attacks on America, subsequent U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and multiple presidential elections. Before joining The AP, Garnier led online newsroom operations in San Francisco for both the San Francisco Chronicle and Hearst-owned San Francisco Examiner. Since 1997, Garnier has designed and developed websites for news organizations and community groups, including a bilingual multimedia site for El Tecolote in 2009. In 2012, Garnier returned to SF State from Stanford University, where he worked as a senior web developer in the bioengineering department. In 2015, Garnier led a team which received a Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education grant for Newspoints, a mobile application to collect, edit and publish news footage in the field. A Mission district native, Garnier earned a B.S. in Journalism in 2010 from San Francisco State. In 2019, Garnier was honored by with the Society of Professional Journalists NorCal Excellence in Journalism award for design.
