Tenure-track Assistant Professor Position

Position Description
San Francisco State University’s Journalism Department offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in multimedia journalism across digital platforms starting in August 2019. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include digital/online journalism, data journalism, beginning and advanced video and audio storytelling. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute through their research or creative works, teaching, and/or service, and through diversity, to the excellence of the academic community.

The Journalism Department was founded in 1960 and is one of eight universities in California that is accredited through the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The department prides itself in preparing students for careers in various journalistic positions in a quickly evolving industry and works to develop adaptability and versatility in its students.

Responsibilities:
The position requires undergraduate teaching in topics listed above, mentoring and advising; developing an active ongoing program of scholarship or creative work within the field of journalism and; participation in the shared governance process through work in professional activities, committee work and student activities. Qualifications:
Candidates should have significant professional experience producing digital media across platforms, should be an experienced and innovative storyteller, and have an active record of journalistic activity. It’s preferred that candidates have a Ph.D. or M.F.A, or equivalent terminal degree in journalism, communication or other relevant field; OR a M.A., M.S. or M.J. in journalism or related fields with significant professional experience and scholarly potential. The terminal degree must be completed by August 1, 2018.

The successful candidate will have experience as a working journalist and experience teaching college level digital news production. More specifically, the candidate should have expertise in one of the following:

Digital storytelling
Multimedia or multiplatform storytelling
Digital immersive media, such as virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR), mixed reality, 360 video and/or other emerging media forms or types.
Data-driven journalism
Digital production management
Digital audio storytelling, such as podcasting
Digital video storytelling
Web or mobile storytelling

Candidates should demonstrate a capacity to inform their teaching with scholarship, to establish and maintain relationships with industry professionals, and to contribute to a multidisciplinary faculty community. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to teach in ways that respond to the learning needs and interests of a culturally diverse student population, and that reflect a commitment to encouraging the success of all students. Additionally, candidates should show a capacity for excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students, maintaining a robust research or creative works agenda, and performing school, college and community-wide service.

Rank and salary:
Assistant Professor salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
