Journalism Department Seeks Instructors

The Journalism Department at San Francisco State University seeks part-time instructors to teach introductory journalism courses, including JOUR 205 Social Impact of Journalism and JOUR 221 Newswriting, in Spring 2020. We also may need new instructors for these and other courses in Summer and Fall 2020.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least five years of professional experience in the journalism field.
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field or bachelor's degree in another field and at least eight years of professional experience.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of San Francisco State University students and the campus community.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least two years of teaching experience at the community college or university level.
• Extensive professional experience in a variety of journalism formats (newspaper, online, magazine, TV, radio, etc.)
• Master's degree in journalism or related field

• Competencies in curriculum & course development; teaching & learning theory; information resources & evaluating student outcomes; and assisting students in developing critical thinking skills
• Currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility and subject matter
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues and members of the campus community
• Commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of San Francisco State University
• Understanding of contemporary equity and diversity concepts and issues in a California State University setting
• Familiarity with, willingness and ability to use multiple teaching methods
• Ability and enthusiasm to use teaching methods that engage students and encourage them to be motivated self-learners
• Evidence of excellent written and oral skills in English
• Ability to speak and write in Spanish
