COVID-19 advisory
The Spring 2020 semester has been a challenging and dynamic time for the San Francisco State University community, as it has for most of the world, as we face the threat of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
On March 9, President Lynn Mahoney announced that in-person classes would be suspended and that the university would go to online instruction, beginning March 16. On that date, just as remote instruction was getting into full swing, six Bay Area counties – San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Marin and Santa Clara – issued “shelter-in-place” orders effective at midnight that night through at least April 7 to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Other Northern California counties issued similar orders later that week.
Online instruction is now expected to continue through the end of the Spring 2020 semester. The last day of instruction is May 15.
We recognize this is a major disruption in the lives of students, faculty and staff and that this is a very stressful time for us all. This page is designed to help you navigate these massive social and academic changes.
As this situation continues to evolve this page will be updated.
The Journalism Department Office
Our office staff will continue our work remotely. If you need to contact us, please send an email. If you have hard-copy forms or petitions that need to be submitted, please send them (along with supporting documentation) to Amber Wehrer at amberw@sfsu.edu. You can call the Journalism Department office at 415 338-3560.
You can reach Journalism Department Chair Rachele Kanigel at kanigel@sfsu.edu or 415 338-2663.
You can find contact information for other journalism faculty here.
Labs and Equipment
The Journalism Department labs are not open to students at this time. Because we can’t properly sanitize equipment and most of the campus is closing, equipment is not available for checkout. If you have equipment out on loan, you can return it the College of Liberal & Creative Arts Dean’s Office in Creative Arts 251, through Thursday, March 19. After that most of the campus will be closed and you should return it when you come back to campus.
Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental instruction (SI), or peer tutoring, is available via Zoom throughout the campus closure. To schedule a one-on-one session, contact one of the SI leads:
