Alum Astrid Riecken wins White House News Photographers Association's top awards
Alumna Astrid Riecken was recently named 2014 Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers Association in The Eyes of History contest, also taking home first prize in the Feature, Picture Story International and Portfolio categories as well as second place in Picture Story Feature and third place in Portrait.
A freelance photographer based in Washington, D.C., Riecken shoots frequently for the Washington Post, Getty Images and European Press Photo Agency. In 2009 she was chosen to participate in the Berlin Wall Project, sponsored by the Goethe Institute, New York City and D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. In 2008, Riecken covered Barack Obama’s presidential campaign; her photographs are published in the book President Obama: The Start of an Era.
Riecken (B.A., Journalism, ’97) has won numerous awards in Picture of the Year International and the National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photography. Her work, along with that of the Washington Times’ photography staff, was nominated as a 2003 Pulitzer Prize finalist for vivid images capturing the events and emotions stirred by the sniper killings in the Washington, D.C., region.
Riecken and the other contest winners will be honored at the annual Eyes of History gala May 10 in Washington, D.C.
