Guest Speaker: Mike McPhate, founder of the California Sun

Mike McPhate will be a guest speaker in the JOUR 330 Editing class to discuss his approach to story selection and layout of email newsletters. His brief talk will be followed by a Q&A. Students and faculty from other journalism courses are invited to attend.

The California Sun is a weekday newsletter in which McPhate rounds up stories of interest statewide from 80 news and social media sites.

Prior to starting his own news organization, McPhate wrote the California Today newsletter for The New York Times. He also worked as a reporter and editor at The Washington Post and The New York Sun. He’s based in Los Osos, near San Luis Obispo.
