Meet Sarahbeth Maney, BA, Photojournalism, 2019 this Thursday at 12:30. Last week Maney was named as a 2021 New York Times Fellow.

Sarahbeth Maney also known as SB, is an independent photojournalist based in Oakland, California. She will be joining The New York Times Washington, D.C. bureau as a photo fellow in June 2021.

Her work focuses on topics related to education, disability and social issues that disproportionately impact Black and brown communities. As a journalist, her goal is to further representation within the industry and portray each story as honestly as it exists.

While receiving her bachelor's degree in photojournalism from San Francisco State University, where she also served as The National Press Photographers Association chapter president, Maney interned at The San Francisco Chronicle, The Flint Journal in Michigan and The S.F. Examiner.

Recently, she directed and filmed a short documentary about Ahmet Ustunel, a blind educator and adventurer, who attempts to kayak independently from Asia to Europe using prototype navigational technology. The film had its World Premiere at The SCAD Savannah Film Festival in October 2020.

Maney frequently contributes to The New York Times and The San Francisco Chronicle. Her work has also appeared in The Washington Post, TIME, The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, CNN, The Guardian, HuffPost, Bloomberg, Forbes, Refinery29, Globe and Mail, among others.
