Eli Reed became a photographer in 1970 at age 24. He worked for newspapers in New Jersey and Michigan before becoming a staff photographer for the San Francisco Examiner in 1980. While at the Examiner, Reed’s stories on San Francisco’s notorious “Pink Palace” housing project led to its eventual demolition and the Pulitzer Prize final round. He took a leave from the the Examiner in 1982 to became a Neiman Fellow at Harvard University. A year later, he was nominated as an associate member of Magnum Photos.
